But when that change took place I was so stunned by what happened, and not satisfied with just enjoying the fruits of the labor – I wanted to know why it happened.

Do you know that most companies don’t know why their top performers are the top performers? – and the top performers don’t know either! If they did know, they’d bottle it and give it to everybody. The same is true today for most successful people – if you ask them why they became successful – they don’t know.

They can tell you what they did, but what they really can’t tell you is why they chose to do those things – what made the difference in that choice of whether to act or whether not to.

That’s the question. I wanted to know the answer. I really wanted to know. And that got me studying, with people who were extraordinary in this area. I ended up working with Earl Nightingale, right beside him for five years.

And for over forty or so years I’ve been studying it – I still study it. In fact, this might sound slightly boastful, but it’s the truth: I probably know more about this than anyone else – and that’s only because I’ve studied it probably more than anyone else.
